Rope PDF Print E-mail

A twisted or braided product made from synthetic or natural fibers that generally is used for lashing, tying, bundling, securing and decorative purposes.

Rope can be twisted or braided. If it is twisted, it can be either three strand, four strand or five strand, although the most common form used in the Western Hemisphere is 3-strand. If made from synthetic fibers, such as Nylon, Polyester or Polypropylene, enhanced performance characteristics are achieved. The arrival of these fibers after Word War II greatly expanded the capabilities of rope and rope usage. (The Philippines, which produced the hard fiber for rope prior to World War II, were a strategic objective of the Pacific War Theater.)

Twisted ropes can also be made of natural fibers, such as Abaca, Agave, Cotton and other smaller usage fibers. These “natural fiber ropes” tend to be used in decorative applications (because of their inherent resistance to UV) or in absorptive applications because they can absorb and hold moisture (to their usage detriment in most cases).

If the rope is braided, it can be of the above referenced fibers. A braided rope can be a single braid, a solid braid, or a Kernmantle (Double Braid). Various approaches to fiber bundling will yield various end-user results.  In all cases where performance issues raise the risk to life, limb or property, the consumer should consult the manufacturer for guidance and advice on performance guidelines.
